Church Happenings and Outreach – New/Current

Rev. Andy is on the final leg of his journey walking the Camino Santiago in Spain and he will return on Wednesday, August 2. The walk has taken him through many historic churches with pilgrims from around the world.

First Church at Fenway Park: Can you feel it?  This could be a very special year for the Red Sox…and First Church has a special opportunity at Fenway.  A block of 25 tickets has been reserved for us. The game is on Friday, September 29th at 7:10 PM vs. The Houston Astros for $35 (Grandstand right field).  Please sign up at the CE Corner and leave a check made out to First Church Nashua with Red Sox in the memo line.

Nursery Caregivers for the Fall – Do you like working with infants and young children? Would you like to join the Nursery Team? As part of a 4-5 person nursery team (there are 6 teams), your team will be scheduled once every 6 weeks. If this is something you would like to do, please contact Diane Matthes at [email protected] or call the church office at 882-4861.

Volunteers Needed for Summer Program – Childcare is available for infants-age 5 throughout the 9 AM worship service. Children in grades 1-6 are invited to join their parents in the sanctuary for worship, leaving after the children’s message and going to the dining room for activity time. Volunteers are needed to make this program a valuable experience for the children of First Church. Sign up at the CE Corner or call the church office.

Get to Know the Handbells – Want to try ringing those shiny bronze bells that our choirs play on Sunday mornings? Anyone grade 4 through adult interested in learning some basic bell-ringing skills is invited to attend one or more of the just-for-fun sessions on the following dates:  August 6: 10:30am, Sanctuary; August 9: 7pm, Balcom Room; August 24: 7pm, Balcom Room; August 29: 7pm, Balcom Room

The First Music Annual Ad Campaign – Renewals have been sent out from the Ad Campaign Subcommittee that supports FIRST MUSIC and new ad space will be available to book, through the summer. Help us keep FIRST MUSIC a balanced budget music outreach to our community! (In addition to underwriting from the Huber Trust, all Ad and ticket donations offset the complete Series costs of promotional materials and Artists!)

The Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter’s Backpack Program will continue through the middle of August.  All donations are greatly appreciated.  The Outreach Committee would like to collect enough items to fill 50 backpacks, but we need your help!  Lists of needed items are located at the Outreach Booth in Fellowship Hall, or you can contact Lisa Gribbin-Perrin at 603-422-4976 or [email protected] for more information.

This program provides backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies for students grades 1–12 who might otherwise not be able to afford these basic, but essential items. Over 2000 backpacks were distributed last year.

The Mission Trip Clothing Drive – Clothing and miscellaneous items continue to be collected through August 27. Items need to be clean and in bags.  Leave the items in the Mission Trip collection box in the Courtyard entrance lobby.  Handbags, tablecloths, costumes, potholders, linens, slipcovers, rags.  What to do with an extra shoe, send it too!!

Homemade goods for the Christmas Fair – If you prepare preserves and pickled vegetables this summer, consider making some extra to donate to the fair. These types of items are always popular with fair-goers. Contact Jocelyn Henning, 880-1839, or Carolyn Mulrooney, 888-3900, for more information.

Silent Auction looking for donations – We know November 3rd seems far off, but the First Church Craft Fair will be here before we know it. The Fair committee is soliciting donations for the Silent Auction at the fair. All proceeds from the Silent Auction go to the Pastoral Aid Fund.  If you have an item you want to donate or have any questions about making a donation, you can contact Sarah Creaney at [email protected] or 603-921-1009. The Annual Horton Center weekend: Friday-Sunday August 25-27, 2017 – Held at the camp and retreat center, owned and operated by the New Hampshire Conference of the UCC on Pine Mt. in Gorham, NH, this weekend is open to everyone – adults, children, singles, couples, families.  It is all about fun – hiking, swimming, visiting, reading, relaxing and enjoying the peace and beauty of northern New Hampshire in the late summer.  This is a great way to spend time with and get to know other First Church members, especially if you are new to the community.

OWL: Just Say Know – I am a 9th grade boy and just learned that a girl in my class likes me. I don’t like her in the same way.  How should I handle this?  

OWL (Our Whole Lives) is a comprehensive program for high school students focusing on communication, relationships, decision making and sexuality. Students in grades 9-12 are welcome.  An informational breakfast will be held in the dining room on Sunday, September 17, 8:30-9:30 AM for students and parents who want to learn more about OWL.

An OWL Thank you – Our OWL Facilitator Training Class was a great success! Seventeen individuals from five New England states, 6 from First Church, have now been trained to teach OWL Classes. Thank you to all of the First Church families who offered their homes and also to those families who dropped off food for our meals.

As one attendee commented…”To be so well cared for certainly enhanced the value of the training and its success.” Thank you for giving a “hoot” and supporting the OWL program!

Attention All Women! The NHCUCC Women’s Fellowship Fall Retreat is scheduled for September 29-30, 2017 at Camp Sentinel in Tuftonboro, NH.

The rate for this overnight retreat is $85 for accommodations (but not bed linens), dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Retreat leader is Rev. Renee Rouse. The theme is “Living together in One World”. A $25-deposit is required by August 1. Early registration is $75 (less deposit) by September 10, and late registration is $85 after September 10.

The Craft Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month 6:30 – 8:00 PM in the dining room. The next session: August 16. We welcome anyone who is interested in crafting for the November 3 – 5, 2017 Christmas Fair.

The fair is a ministry of fellowship and service. Fair proceeds help those in need through our ministers’ Pastoral Aid Fund. We would love to add new talent and items this year.  If you have any questions or ideas, please contact Jocelyn Henning at 880-1839.

End 68 Hours of Hunger provides bags of food weekly to local elementary school children who would otherwise not have food over the weekend. The following items are needed: nutritional cereal, canned soup/pasta, 18oz. plastic peanut butter, 20 oz. plastic jelly, canned tuna/chicken, small cans of fruit, boxes of macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles (no cups), nutrition bars.  Collection boxes are set up in Fellowship Hall.

The Giving Card offers an option for those folks who give electronically or monthly to symbolically participate in the offering. Cards can be found in the pews and in the basket at the back of the sanctuary.  Simply place it in the offering plate.

First Church Cyclists invite anyone, regardless of age or ability to join them for some fun, fresh air, fellowship and most importantly, ice cream. The next ride: August 6, Reformatory/Narrow Gauge Trail, Depot Park, Bedford, MA at 2:00 PM. A schedule can be found on the First Church website. First Church serves dinner at the Nashua Soup Kitchen on the third Tuesday and fourth Friday of the month from 4:00-6:00 PM.  New volunteers are always welcome to participate in this simple, but important outreach ministry.  To serve on a Tuesday please contact Patricia Cooper, [email protected] or 566-1826.  If you are interested in helping on a Friday, please call Cindy Staradub, 888-9561.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry – Knitters and crocheters are invited to work on prayer shawls at home during the summer months. Contact Karen Bianchi, 603-897-0788 or Laurel Lang 603-465-3372 to see how you can be involved in this simple, but meaningful ministry.

Pulpit Flowers – If you would like to provide flowers for the pulpit, please sign up on the chart in Fellowship Hall. Flower arrangements can be purchased from your favorite florist or can be created from flowers you’ve purchased or grown.  Register on the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall or call the church office.

The thrift shop is closed for the season. Items may still be donated for the clothing drive to help support the Mission Trip Planning Team.
