CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CORNER

Today in the Sunday School     January 7, 2018

Today is the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. The color is white.

Nursery Care – The church nursery opens at 9:45 AM to care for children under the age of three during the 10:00 service.  Nursery coordinators are on hand to greet parents and explain the procedure for checking in and picking up your child.

Sunday School

  • 3 yr. olds-K will hear about the Magi. Matthew 2:9-11
  • 1st and 2nd grade will hear about the Gifts of the Magi. Matthew 2:1-11
  • Grades 3-5 will start their unit on The 10 Commandment, learning about Rules, Rules, Rules! Exodus 20:1-17
  • The MAD students will remain in the sanctuary for the worship service and communion.

After the Children’s Message, all classes 3 yr. old-6th grade will go to the Shaw Chapel to sing with Mr. Steve before going to classrooms. 

College Seminar – All High School juniors and sophomores and their parents are invited to a seminar, Getting Started on Your College Search, led by Craig Plummer on Sunday, January 28, 11:30 AM-2:00 PM, in Room 10.

The Christian Education Board will provide lunch at no cost for students and parents.  Sign up at the CE Corner in Fellowship Hall or call the church office at 882-4861 no later than January 22. PRE REGISTRATION FOR THIS FREE LUNCHEON AND SEMINAR IS A MUST. You will not want to miss this opportunity to gain from Craig’s vast experience as a high school guidance counselor and professional consultant.  Many families pay a great deal of money for such services; Craig generously offers his time and expertise to you as a member of First Church. 

Sunday School Food Drive – The annual Sunday school food collection will be held on Sunday, January 28.  This year’s donations will help End 68 Hours of Hunger, a program that provides bags of food weekly to local elementary school children who would otherwise not have food over the weekend.  The following items are needed: nutritional cereal, canned soup/pasta, 18oz. plastic peanut butter, 20 oz. plastic jelly, canned tuna/chicken, small cans of fruit, boxes of macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles (no cups), nutrition bars. 

Greater Nashua Church Basketball League – Next game: First Church vs. New England Pentecostal Church on Saturday, January 13 at 2:15 PM. Games are played at the Nashua YMCA, 24 Staduim Drive. Contact Coach Spencer Rancourt, [email protected], with any questions.

Valentine Packages – It is time to start updating your college students’ mailing addresses for Valentine packages. All addresses from Halloween have been INACTIVATED and you MUST let me know if it is the same or if it has changed. The deadline is February 4. MAD will pack the boxes on February 11. Please send addresses to [email protected]

Annual Mitten Tree Drive – Every family is invited to participate in this important community service by donating one pair of child size mittens – made or purchased – to our mitten tree.  The mittens are distributed to children in need through the Amherst St. School, Mt. Pleasant School, and Adult Learning Center. HELP KEEP LITTLE HANDS WARM. Please bring your mittens by Sunday January 28. You may leave them in the basket next to the tree or put them on the tree yourselves (clips provided).

French Toast Brunch – January 21, 2018, 11:30 AM – Hosted by the In-Reach committee, this is a wonderful intergenerational get-together.  Bring your families and join us in the dining room.  On the menu: Cranberry Apple French Toast, Apple Raisin French Toast, and Peanut Butter & Jelly.  A gluten free option will be available upon request.

Mission Trip Opportunity – A team of adults and Sr. High students will be working with Outreach360 in Jinotega, Nicaragua during the week April 21-28, 2018. There are still some openings available. Please contact Rev. Ken for more information.

12th Annual First Church Chili Contest is coming Sunday February 4 – Start working on your recipes!  All types of chili are welcome – spicy, mild, sweet, exotic, vegetarian, etc. This year, the one that sells the most will be the winner!  All proceeds will benefit the Mission Trip Fund.  Participants should register at the CE Corner and pick up details of the contest.  Please contact Diane Matthes at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Pledge Envelopes – If you have requested 2018 pledge envelopes, they are available today at Sign-up Central.  If you would like to have envelopes, but did not check the box on your pledge card… you are not too late!  Please put your name on the sheet at Sign-up Central and they will be ready for you next Sunday.

Winter Parking Reminder – Use caution when parking along the north side of the church building. Heed the posted signs. Falling snow and ice can cause damage to your cars!

Church Happenings and Outreach – Ongoing 

Bereavement Calendar – The church office has created a new bereavement calendar to help us better remember and celebrate the lives of church members, friends, and loved ones who have recently passed away.  If your family experiences a loss, please contact the church office so that we can be sure to include you in our prayers and our records.

The Bible, Friends, and Coffee Bible Study meets on Mondays 9:30-11:00 AM in room 15, in the Walker Building.  The discussion group is facilitated by Rev. Andy Armstrong.  No sign-up is required.  If you have a Bible, bring it; if not, one will be supplied for you. The group will not meet on January 15.

The Caregiver’s Support Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 2:00 PM.  Please contact Rev. Jami for more information.

Drop-In Hours – Join Rev. Ken at the Riverwalk Café (35 Railroad Square) on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 PM for a cup of coffee and some casual conversation.

The Funeral Reception Committee is looking for people to donate cookies and/or other finger foods for funeral receptions.  People will be called on an as-needed basis.  If you are willing to help please go to Sign-Up Central and give us your contact information.  Many hands make light work.  Thank you for yours.

The Giving Card offers an option for those folks who give electronically or monthly to symbolically participate in the offering.  Cards can be found in the basket at the back of the sanctuary.  Simply place it in the offering plate.

First Church serves dinner at the Nashua Soup Kitchen on the third Tuesday and fourth Friday of the month from 4:00-6:00 PM.  New volunteers are always welcome to participate in this simple, but important outreach ministry.  To serve on a Tuesday please contact Patricia Cooper, [email protected] or 566-1826.  If you are interested in helping on a Friday, please call Cindy Staradub, 888-9561.

The Ladies Lunch Bunch meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 12:30 PM.  The group will dine at Chen Yang Li, 379 Amherst St., Nashua, on January 10. Contact Arlene Richmond, [email protected] or 943-7970, for more information. All women of the church- members and friends- are welcome.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry – Knitters and crocheters are invited to work on prayer shawls at home.  Contact Karen Bianchi, 603-897-0788 or Laurel Lang 603-465-3372 to see how you can be involved in this simple, but meaningful ministry.

Pulpit Flowers – If you would like to provide flowers for the pulpit, please sign up on the chart in Fellowship Hall.  Flower arrangements can be purchased from your favorite florist or can be created from flowers you’ve purchased or grown.  Register on the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall or call the church office.

The Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM and the first Saturday of the month, 9:00 AM-Noon (except on holidays).  Winter clothing for women and children, clean and in good repair, may be left in the marked bin in the lobby at the courtyard entrance.  Children’s clothing up to size 14, women’s pocketbooks, jewelry, and small knickknacks are especially needed.
