CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CORNER

 Today in the Sunday School     May 6, 2018

Today is the sixth Sunday of Easter. The color is white.

Nursery Care

The church nursery opens at 9:45 AM to care for children under the age of 3 during the 10 AM worship service. Nursery coordinators are on hand to greet parents and explain the procedure for checking in and picking up your child.

Sunday School

  • 3 year olds-2nd grade will hear Liturgy of Light Lesson.
  • Grades 3-5 continue their unit on Paul, learning about Timothy. Acts 16:1-3a; 1 Timothy 4:6-16
  • 6th grade will work on the Children’s Day program.
  • MAD will remain in the sanctuary for communion. 

All graduating high school seniors will be honored during the 10:00 AM worship service next Sunday, Mother’s Day. First Church takes great pride in its young people. In recognition of their latest achievement, seniors will be called forward to receive a token of esteem and love from the congregation.

To make this event even more special, the Board of Christian Education will host a breakfast for seniors and their families at 8:30 AM that day. Please RSVP TODAY by calling the church office, 882-4861 or by emailing Diane Matthes, [email protected] 

Vacation Bible School craft items needed – Please see the poster at the CE Corner for items being collected for VBS. 

Youth Group for High Schoolers – Sundays, May 20 and June 10, 11:30 AM-1:00 PM: Join us for these fun-filled times of friendship, food, and frolicking. We’ll gather right after the 10 AM worship service to enjoy gregarious group games, boisterous bonding activities, thrilling lessons, and meaningful discussions on a variety of relevant topics. Pizza and other tasty snacks will be provided as well! At the same time that our group will be meeting, Rev. Andy has offered to lead activities for your parents as well.

Church Happenings and Outreach – New/Current 

The First Music Concert Series is holding “Pizza and Pistons”, a brass quintet of Symphony NH this afternoon at 4:00 PM. The program will cater to the youngest audience members (elementary and junior high students) and will conclude with pizza for all concert attendees. Purchasing tickets ahead is recommended for this program. Tickets are on sale following worship services or through the church office during the week.

All Boards meet tomorrow evening, May 7. Prior to the meetings, members of the Kitchen Kabinet will offer a kitchen training at 6:30 PM. Those wishing to use the kitchen or dining room need to have gone through the training. Please sign-up at Sign-Up Central.

One Great Hour of Sharing – A gift to OGHS enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. Envelopes were included in the May newsletter and are also available in the pew racks. Please place them in the offering plate on Sunday or return them to the church office by the end of May.

The Bible, Friends, and Coffee Bible is on break for the summer months. An informal study group will meet on May 14, June 11, July 16 and August 13 in the library. Contact Mary Beth Glajch at [email protected] or the church office with any questions.

Electronic Recycling Fundraiser – Saturday, May 19, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM – Bring your old electronic equipment to the church to be responsibly recycled. A modest fee will be charged per item with a portion going to the Mission Trip Fund. Computers, phones, radios, TVs monitors, wires and more will be accepted. A complete list of accepted items is available at the CE Corner in Fellowship Hall.

“Pretty in Pink”, the Women’s Association Spring Fling potluck supper and Yankee Swap will be held on Monday, May 14, at 6:30 PM in the church dining room. All women are members of the Women’s Association. Wear something pink in celebration of spring. Bring a gift (no more than $10) for the swap. Bring a dish to share (main dish, side dish or dessert). Would you like to provide flowers for the pulpit? There are several dates available from May 13 through August. Please sign up on the chart in Fellowship Hall. Flower arrangements can be purchased from your favorite florist or can be created from flowers you’ve purchased or grown. Register on the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall or call the church office.

Church Forum with Rev. Andy: “You, Me and the UCC” – In this forum Rev. Andy will share with you a brief history of the UCC and explain why our UCC churches are so different from one another, and how it is that so many good and faithful churches find themselves in conflict between and among themselves. Most importantly, what does this mean for First Church in our 333rd year of ministry?

The first forum will take place on May 20 at 11:30 AM following worship in Nauss Hall. This forum will be repeated on Tuesday May 22 at 7:00 PM in the dining room.

First Church Cyclists invite anyone, regardless of age or ability to join them for some fun, fresh air, fellowship and most importantly, ice cream. The first ride of 2018 will take place at the Londonderry Rail Trail, Sunday May 20th at 2:00 PM. From Rockingham Road (Route 28), turn onto Sanborn Road; parking is available in the parking lot for North Londonderry Elementary School (19 Sanborn Road). Houston Mission Trip Set for June 23-30 – A team of youth (current high school students) and adults from First Church will be traveling to Texas this summer to help families recover from damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. If you or any friends are interested in learning more about the trip, but were unable to come to last month’s informational meeting, please contact Rev. Ken, [email protected] or 882-4861.

“Sunday Mornings with Andy Armstrong” airs every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM on WSMN. A link is provided on our webpage, under Upcoming Events, so our First Church members, friends, and students can remain connected to us anywhere in the world.

In-Reach is organizing Dine with Nine dinner groups. The groups usually meet on one Saturday a month for about 3-4 months. Hosting will rotate. The host chooses a “theme” or a country-based menu and everyone in the group contributes something towards the meal. If you would to participate and/or host, sign up at Sign-Up Central. The Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter delivers dinner to hungry kids through their new Nashua Meals for Kids program. Currently, 700 meals are delivered each week through Dr. Crisp Elementary School, the Title 1 Preschool program here at First Church, and the Major Drive apartments. The NSK&S needs 300 people to sponsor a child at $30 a month. Our Outreach Committee will be donating funds to this program but they need more. If you are interested in donating, please email Michael Reinke at [email protected], or send a check to PO Box 3116, Nashua, NH, 03061. Thanks for helping to feed hungry kids in Nashua!

An Ecclesiastical Council to examine Barbara Papagian for commissioning to the ministry of Pastoral Care in and on behalf of the United Church of Christ will be convened at 3:00 PM this afternoon, at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ 508 Union Street, Manchester, NH, 603-625-5093. The First Church Thrift Shop will close for the season on Thursday, June 7th. Thank you to everyone who contributed gently used women’s and children’s clothing this year. We are accepting summer clothing until June 1st.

THERE WILL NOT BE A RUMMAGE SALE THIS YEAR, so we are not collecting items this spring. Please take your clothing and household items to Goodwill, the Salvation Army or Savers.

The shop is open on Thursdays, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM and the first Saturday of the month, 9:00 AM-Noon (except on holidays).

Church Happenings and Outreach – Ongoing

Bereavement Calendar – The church office has created a bereavement calendar to help us better remember and celebrate the lives of church members, friends, and loved ones who have recently passed away. If your family experiences a loss, please contact the church office so that we can be sure to include you in our prayers and our records.

The Caregiver’s Support Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 2:00 PM. Please contact Rev. Jami for more information.

Drop-In Hours – Join Rev. Ken at the Riverwalk Café (35 Railroad Square) on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 PM for a cup of coffee and some casual conversation.

End 68 Hours of Hunger provides bags of food weekly to local elementary school children who would otherwise not have food over the weekend. The following items are needed (updated list): Individually packaged snacks such as granola bars, cookies/crackers, microwave popcorn, Canned Soup, Peanut Butter 18 oz. plastic, Jelly 20 oz. plastic squeeze bottles, Boxes of Instant Oatmeal, Cans of fruit (not applesauce), Crackers (Ritz or Graham), Hot Chocolate or Carnation Instant Breakfast packets

First Church serves dinner at the Nashua Soup Kitchen on the third Tuesday and fourth Friday of the month from 4:00-6:00 PM. New volunteers are always welcome to participate in this simple, but important outreach ministry. To serve on a Tuesday please contact Patricia Cooper, [email protected] or 566-1826. If you are interested in helping on a Friday, please call Cindy Staradub, 888-9561.

The Giving Card offers an option for those folks who give electronically or monthly to symbolically participate in the offering. Cards can be found in the basket at the back of the sanctuary. Simply place it in the offering plate.

The Ladies Lunch Bunch meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 12:30 PM. The group will dine at Firefly, 22 Concord St., Manchester, on May 9. Carpool from the church parking lot at 11:30 AM. Community Events

 Broadway Comes to NH: Well-known actors Dan Lauria and Wendie Malik will be coming to town to do two special performances of the famous Broadway play “Love Letters” on Saturday June 2nd at Souhegan High School. Show times are 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM. Adults: $40. Seniors (over 65) and students: $30

The actors are donating their services and all proceeds will be going to the Front Door Agency.
