Swifts in the Chimney – Last summer, our Sexton, Bruce Lund, discovered that our First Church chimney was being used as a nesting site. Since Chimney Swifts almost exclusively use chimneys for nesting and since Nashua retains a fair number of industrial chimneys, our city has a substantial summer resident swift population. Look in the sky above the church throughout the summer and you will soon see numerous small dark birds with swept back wings darting about catching invisible (to us) insects. While they are not colorful birds with their plain dark brown feathering, they are distinctive in shape being nick-named “flying cigars”. And rather than flapping their wings as is characteristic of most birds, swifts’ wings are held stiff and vibrate rapidly.

Swift nests are intriguing structures. The birds dive through trees and shrubs, breaking off twigs in flight which the females glue together with her sticky saliva against the chimney wall in a half cup shape.

See the display in Fellowship Hall for pictures and more information.
