Youth Ministry

In addition to the opportunities listed under Christian Education and Music, First Church has active Junior and Senior High fellowship groups led by Rev. Ken McGarry and a team of energetic, caring, well-trained adults from the congregation. Fellowship, worship, outreach, and educational activities and programs are designed to encourage the development and deepening of connections between youth and God, one another, adults and children in the congregation, and the world around them.

MAD (Makes a Difference) for seventh and eighth graders meets during the Sunday School time of the 10 a.m. worship service for a combination of classes, service projects, and fellowship. The group has great fun and grows closer together while learning about their faith and serving others. Here’s the fall schedule: October 22 and 29; November 12 and 19; and December 10.

Mission Trips

This coming year, we are looking at offering two different week-long mission trips for adults and sr. high school students. One of these will be from April 21-28, 2018, when a team will be working with Outreach360 in Jinotega, Nicaragua. The other will be a hurricane disaster relief work trip to Texas, Florida, or Puerto Rico from June 23 – July 1, 2018. If you are interested in learning more about one or both of these trips because you or a member of your family may participate, please contact Rev. Ken McGarry at [email protected].

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a values-based human sexuality program offered for sr. high schoolers on one or two Sundays per month throughout the school year from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The group also enjoys a weekend retreat in October. During these sessions, participants gain knowledge and explore values that can help them lead lives that are healthier and more respectful and responsible. The program will be offered on the following Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: October 29; November 12 and 26; December 3; January 7 and 21; February 4 and 11; March 4 and 11; and April 8 and 15. An overnight retreat will also be included; this will be scheduled so as to allow all program members to participate. Please contact Rev. Ken McGarry at [email protected] for more information or to sign up.

Providing a Path for Children and Youth to Grow in Faith & Character: A Seminar for Parents and Teachers
All church members and friends are invited to join us in the dining room on Sunday, October 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch and this enriching seminar, led by Christian educator and author Wynn McGregor. During the seminar, we will explore ways to help our children and youth know who they are and that what they do matters, become more aware of God’s love and presence, know deep in their hearts God’s grace and forgiveness, and develop strong character and moral convictions. Together, we will share our thoughts, experiences, and questions; explore opportunities for helping our children and youth sort through complex challenges; and discover ways for all of us to become more aware of God’s love and abiding presence. Sign up or get more information at Christian Education Corner in Fellowship Hall or by contacting Rev. Ken or Diane Matthes at the church office.

Screenagers — Movie and discussion event for all youth and parents, facilitated by Sue Haas, Friday, December 1, 7 – 9 p.m.
